Especially for shoots where you need to move yourself, a stabilizer or rig is an important addition to your setup. Stabilise your images and your videos will be much calmer, sharper and easier to control.
There are many different types of products that fall under stabilizers and rigs. Something for everyone — which also makes the choice challenging.
A stabilizer is designed to eliminate unwanted movements. The goal is a smooth, vibration-free image — the camera moves independently of the videographer and remains stable. A camera gimbal or smartphone gimbal are examples of stabilizers. Choose stabilizers if you film a lot while moving and want the smoothest possible image.
A camera rig is designed to support and further expand the camera. A rig is a frame with handle on which you can mount extra components such as a monitor or microphone. It makes the camera more ergonomic and professional. A videorig, camera cage and baseplate are examples of rigs. Choose a rig if you want to hold your camera more stably, have more control or want to expand your setup further.
As a videographer, you want to move more smoothly, film more comfortably or gradually expand your setup. At Kamera Express you can choose from a wide range of stabilizers and rigs that match your wishes. In the stores you receive help and advice from our specialists who think along with you about your (video)camera, weight and workflow.
Stabilizers are mainly designed to dampen movement and make your footage smoother. A rig is designed to hold your camera more comfortably and expand it with accessories, so you work faster and more consistently.
A gimbal is a type of stabilizer. The difference is that a gimbal usually uses motors and sensors to actively keep your camera level and stable — working electronically. A stabilizer can also be mechanical, or a solution that primarily improves your grip and carrying comfort. In practice, choose a gimbal if you walk a lot and want truly smooth movement, and another stabilizer or even a rig if you mainly want more control and comfort.
Look at the total weight of your camera with lens and any accessories. Choose a stabilizer that can comfortably handle this weight. Also consider battery life and how quickly you can balance the camera.
A slider is not a replacement, but a type of stabilizer and a way to achieve stability in your footage. Stabilizers primarily help with walking and handheld movement. A slider gives you controlled movements from a fixed position — ideal for product shots, interviews and long cinematic scenes.
If you film a lot with your phone, a smartphone gimbal is usually the right choice — you start quickly and film steadily right away. A gimbal with grip is therefore a good foundation if you often film handheld.
