ND filters, or neutral density filters, are used when too much light limits your creative options. They reduce the amount of light in accordance with their density. This allows for longer exposure times or a wider aperture. The applications are highly varied and in some cases experimental. For very bright subjects in the snow or on the beach, the aperture would otherwise need to be closed down despite the minimum shutter speed. This would mean losing the option of a shallow depth of field, for example when shooting portraits.

ND filters can create motion blur effects when the shutter speed can be extended with the required aperture. A waterfall then no longer appears frozen, but as a flowing movement. ND filters create ingenious effects in architectural or urban photography. With long exposures of several hours, people walking through the frame appear blurred or not at all. For physical reasons, very dense filters have a warm cast, which can be compensated for in post-processing.
